An entire generation of ghost hunters now exists who believe they are experts in a field that has yielded little or no proof of the existence of ghosts. But their so-called “evidence” is enough to help them live out their 15 minutes of fame. We have to start setting standards within our community. This cannot happen until a new paranormal paradigm is born, one that takes us in a new direction, with new tactics and new levels of accountability in our field of science. We have to build a noticeable wall between the serious researchers and the hobby ghost hunters. A very visual disassociation has to exist between the two to give people who are experiencing paranormal activity a viable way to validate a paranormal investigator’s work ethic, methods, tools, and motivations, as well to as give us protection in the event of a class action suit. The word “contactee” brings to mind those individuals who appeared in the era of UFOs, from 1947 to the present. Contactees first came into prominence in the early 1950s, when individuals from around the world, most notoriously in Southern California, reported that friendly space people were delivering messages to them via interplanetary telepathy or face-to-face encounter. Anyone who knows the history of 20th-century occult culture knows the names George Van Tassel, George Adamski, Howard Menger, and others who defined the contactee movement in its formative years. What is less known is that before there was widespread speculation about visitors from other planets, there were communications, or at least purported communications, from extraterrestrials. > more
