“Thank you, St. Jude, for favors received. Publication as promised.”
Have you ever seen that statement in a newspaper ad? Or perhaps you’ve seen one that contains a prayer to St. Jude, followed by instructions to “Say this prayer nine times a day for nine days. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised.”
I had seen such ads in my local papers for years, but it wasn’t until I became embroiled in an emotionally devastating lawsuit with major financial implications that I felt desperate enough to call on St. Jude for help. Sure enough, my prayer was answered—well, it took quite a bit longer than eight days, but in the end I received the best possible outcome. The happy resolution to my problem got me wondering: Just who is this St. Jude, why is praying to him so effective, and what’s the deal with the mandate to publish? Is he the patron saint of newspaper advertising departments?
All I knew about Jude is that he was somehow related to Jesus, that Marlo Thomas supports his Children’s Hospital, and that he’s the go-to guy when you’ve run out of options—he’s known as the patron saint of lost causes and desperate cases. And I knew that he solved a problem that had been making my life hellish for years. I was driven to find out whom it was I had prayed to. Little did I know how impossible that would be...
