ROSEMARY ELLEN GUILEY NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2010
Hi Folks,
Imbolc greetings this month – February 2 marked midwinter. I’ve been deep into writing since the turn of the year – just as well with all the snow!
In this issue, some announcements, upcoming events, and my recent personal experience with “money apports.”
ANNOUNCEMENTS
I’m pleased to join the new UFO Research Center of Pennsylvania as a paranormal consultant. UFORCOP is founded by Butch Witkowski, director, and John Bainbridge, assistant director, and features some of the finest researchers in the field. It is independent of MUFON. UFORCOP is refreshingly multi-disciplinary in approach, covering the paranormal and cryptozoology as well as ufology. Pennsylvania is a highly active state on all fronts, and the new team is an exciting advancement in objective research. A website is in progress.
My “Encyclopedia of Dreams: Symbols and Interpretations” is now published in Estonian!
The newly revamped TAPS Paramagazine will be out soon, featuring my cover article on The Evil Eye. www.tapsparamagazine.com
EVENTS
I will give classes on vampires, werewolves, demons and psychic protection Feb. 23-25 at the International Metaphysical University in Parkersburg, WV. All classes are in the evening and are open to the public as well as students. I’ll be covering history, myth, folklore, pop culture, cases, and practical considerations. Check out the details at www.myspace.com/hauntedparkersburg
Coming up in March…
I will present at EPIC Con at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach March 12-14, www.epiccon.com
Unfortunately I have to miss the annual memorial tribute to HP Lovecraft, “The Ineffable, Inscrutable, Intriguing Mr. Lovecraft!” on March 14. If you are in the Providence, RI area, check it out at the Ladd Observatory, 210 Dole Avenue, at 3 PM, and come in your Goth or fantasy best! This free public event will be a celebration of the unique literary contributions of H.P. Lovecraft (born August 20, 1890, died March 15, 1937) and his life in Providence. Noted historian and author Christian Henry Tobler will preside as Master of Ceremonies. The hour program will feature dramatic readings from the horrific fiction of Lovecraft, recitations of Lovecraft poetry, plus original material created for the occasion. Respects will be paid at Lovecraft’s grave in Swan Point Cemetery.
The annual tribute is organized by my friend Carl L. Johnson, founder of the H.P. Lovecraft Commemorative Activities Committee, who can be contacted at carcosan@live.com
Radio shows and other events are posted on my calendar page, http://www.visionaryliving.com/calendar/
MONEY APPORTS
An apport is an object that seems to materialize out of thin air, and is a phenomenon of mediumship, hauntings and paranormal “hot zones.” Literally anything can be an apport. In mediumship, apports appear at seances, the implication being that spirits produce them at the behest of the medium, and to demonstrate otherworldly contact.
Apports are also associated with poltergeists, ghosts and other entities who haunt places. Rarely does one actually see an apport manifest. Rather, an object is suddenly noticed, or is found in an unlikely spot. It may be an unknown object, or something that has been moved mysteriously from its regular place to a bizarre place. The object might even go missing for a time before it reappears.
For some unknown reason, many spirits like to deliver coins as apports. Maybe they think we will pay special attention to money. There is usually no apparent explanation behind the apports, other than a means to get attention, and perhaps cause puzzlement on the part of the recipients.
I have been working on a case for about a year now that is in a “hot zone,” that is, all manner of paranormal activity takes place on site and in the surrounding area. About four months ago, I started getting coin apports, mostly at home, even though I live hundreds of miles from the site. The coins came frequently at first – pennies, nickels and dimes, all dated to the 1950s and 1970s. They all have a curious appearance: Their surfaces are very rough and abraded, as though they have been vigorously rubbed by a coarse sanding block, or pounded by something coarse.
The apports started just before I met and interviewed an experiencer in the hot zone – a woman who told me she has had a long history of paranormal activity, including coin apports. She has filled jars with them. On the eve of our interview, she received a 1957 penny. A few days earlier I had also received a 1957 penny that appeared mysteriously on a carpet. We could arrive at no significance of the date, other than we both had 1957 pennies appear.
There were more coins for me, although they started slowing down in frequency. Some coins materialized in my wallet at a time when I had no change. One morning I came downstairs after getting up and found a nickel sitting in the middle of my sofa. A few weeks later, I was rifling through clothes in my closet and a penny and nickel fell out from among them and dropped to the floor.
I don’t keep change in my clothing, so I am at a loss to explain why these coins appear, other than as attention-getting devices. I have wondered that if they are true apports, perhaps the rough surfaces are caused by their interdimensional transport.
Perhaps the small change is just a Trickster prank, which is so characteristic of paranormal phenomena in general. “They” or “It” might just be having a laugh at our expense, as we pick up the coins and try to figure out where they came from. Of course, talking about money apports brings the inevitable jokes from the living, too. Usually I get comments along the lines of, why are the spirits so cheap? If they’re going to hand out money, can’t they leave large bills?
Go figure!
